Job Summary

Provide nursing care under general supervision to patients with a range of health problems from simple to complex on a medical/surgical unit. This position involves caring for post-surgical kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant patients as well as pre-transplant patients undergoing evaluation. The unit is a mixed stepdown and acute care floor requiring close monitoring for infection, rejection, and timely medication delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage an assigned group of patients, documenting responses to nursing interventions and physician orders.
  • Assist physicians with patient examinations and minor diagnostic procedures.
  • Monitor physiological data and intervene as necessary.
  • Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and blood products.
  • Communicate care plans with patients and families during hospitalization and at discharge.
  • Make referrals for patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Delegate tasks to support staff.
  • Work on either medical/surgical or stepdown patients depending on unit needs.
  • May float to stepdown patients if ICU nurses are reassigned.
  • Preceptor and charge nurse experience preferred.

Work Schedule

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Approximately 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Oklahoma
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Experience in an acute care setting
  • Medical/Surgical nursing experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher.
  • Experience with ENT and/or transplant patients.
  • Transplant experience preferred.
  • Preceptor and charge nurse experience preferred.

Additional Information

  • This is not a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) position.
  • The unit cares for both medical/surgical and stepdown patients.
  • Nurses may be assigned to different patient acuity levels based on staffing needs.

Pros

Very nice hospital, I like the fact that I never have to put in orders or sign any consent form. The doctors do all this. There is a lot of hours. On the clinical side, there is a lot to learn. On my unit I got to see so many surgical cases that I never seen in my entire career only because I was on a surgical unit.

Cons

It all depends on the team you are working with. They either break you or make you.
