Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Labor and Delivery

Location: Santa Maria, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery nurse for a travel contract in a hospital setting. The nurse will provide care in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Triage units with a focus on high-risk and diverse obstetric patients.

Unit Details

• Labor & Delivery Beds: 14
• Triage Beds: 6
• Operating Rooms: 2 suites
• Postpartum Beds: 28
• Birth Volume: Approximately 250 births per month
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Laboring: 2:1 (following AWOHNN guidelines)
  • Couplet Care: 1:4
• EMR System: Cerner
• Fetal Monitoring System: Fetal Link

Work Schedule

• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7 PM or 7 PM - 7 AM)
• Shift Type: Days (primarily)
• Hours per Week: 36
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Worked in rotation with permanent staff
• Call Requirement: No call, but may be on standby

Clinical Responsibilities

• Circulate for C-sections (scrubbing experience preferred)
• Float to Postpartum unit as needed (Postpartum staff do not float to Labor & Delivery)
• Care for patients of any gestational age, including antepartum, high-risk deliveries, substance abuse cases, pre-eclampsia, and insulin-dependent diabetics

Orientation & Support

• Floor-specific orientation: 3 shifts
• Charge Nurse role available (charge nurses typically do not take patient assignments)
• OB Tech support available day and night
• Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
• No in-house OB/Neonatologist, but available if needed
• No IV team on site

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active California RN License
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• AWOHNN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) Advanced Fetal Monitoring
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
• C-section circulating experience required; scrubbing preferred

Additional Requirements

• COVID-19 vaccination required
• Nurses wear designated scrub colors (navy for Postpartum, seal blue for Labor & Delivery and OB tech)
