Job Opportunity: Medsurg/Oncology RN

Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Department: Medsurg/Oncology (core staff to administer chemotherapy)
  • Beds: 31
  • Patient Types: Adults and geriatrics with diagnoses including strokes (stroke unit, some acute but no thrombectomies), hypertension, COPD, cellulitis, CHF, atrial fibrillation (non-RVR), chest pain, post-MI ICU transfers, altered mental status/behavioral issues, some telemetry, surgical overflow (no joint or cranial surgeries), oncology patients receiving chemo (no oncology provider on site during the day)

Staffing & Ratios

  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 1:4-5
    • Nights: 1:5-6
  • Charge Nurse present on each shift as a resource, usually no patient assignment unless staffing requires
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio approximately 1:8
  • Telemetry/Monitor Techs: Yes, monitor techs handle strip reading; RNs are not required to interpret EKG strips

Experience & Skills Required

  • Specialty: Medsurg/Oncology RN
  • Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated, but open to first-time travel nurses
  • Preferred Experience: Trach and BiPAP experience preferred but not required
  • RNs are required to titrate drips (common drips include Lasix and Heparin; Lasix experience preferred but not mandatory)

  • Floating: May float to other MedSurg units; telemetry strips handled by telemetry RNs; occasional float to ER; no float to mom/baby unit
  • Orientation: 1-2 shifts of unit-specific orientation on the floor
  • Dress Code: No specific scrub color required; scrubs not provided
  • Unit Culture: Family-oriented, supportive of travelers, strong teamwork

Certifications

  • BLS required
  • NIHSS certification mentioned

Additional Notes

  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start for this 13-week assignment
  • Great unit culture and teamwork emphasized
