Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)
- Unit: 30-bed Adult Operating Room
- Shift Options:
- 4x10 hour shifts (06:45 - 17:15) with some weekday and weekend on-call duties
- OR 3x12 hour shifts (06:45 - 19:15)
- Guaranteed 40 hours per week
- Call Requirements: Yes, self-scheduled with some weeknights and weekends on a rotating schedule
- No floating outside scope of practice
- Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
- Local candidates within 75 miles radius not accepted
- Start dates must be 30-60 days out due to credentialing process
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of First Assist experience, including experience within the last year (no first-time travelers accepted)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree
- Current CNOR certification
- Current CRNFA certification
- RNFA certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience in Robotics, Urology, and Thoracic Surgery
- Operating Room (OR) experience
Health and Safety Requirements
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (October 1 - March 31) unless medically exempt with documentation; refusal without medical proof is not accepted
- COVID-19 vaccination not required; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted
- Annual fit testing for approved masks (3M N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) required before start; candidates may need to travel up to 100 miles for fit testing
- PAPR accommodations available if fit test is failed due to facial hair or face shape
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
- Negative TB test within 3 months of start or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history; annual TB questionnaire required
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Tdap, Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with specific protocols for titers and boosters)
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel; no pending results accepted
Documentation and Compliance
- Background check within 30 days of start including 7-year criminal history, SSN trace, sex offender search, and national/international checks if applicable
- SAM and OIG checks must be completed independently within 30 days of start and updated annually
- Social Security Card and valid Driver’s License required
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
- Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates (EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test)
- Annual medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Annual stroke education CEUs required depending on unit assignment
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification required for certain units (not specifically for this role)
- Annual skills checklist for specialty required
- References: Minimum 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start; charge nurse references must confirm direct supervision
Orientation and Facility Specifics
- Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training
- Required to review and acknowledge facility policies including dress code, blood administration, math calculation for medication administration, and EKG review (for Telemetry/Stepdown, ICU, ER)
- Time and attendance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged
- Facility is a Level IV Trauma Center and major teaching hospital with 838 staffed beds
- Charting system: Cerner
- Scrub color for RNFA: Royal Blue/White
- Free parking for travelers
Additional Notes
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked
- Pending licenses accepted for submission but active license required to start
- No restrictions on return to work (RTO)
- Candidates must complete all required inservice training modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
- Candidates must submit a complete packet including work history, specialty skills checklist, minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references (within past 2 years), license/certification verification, driver’s license, and social security card
