Registered Nurse – Medical Oncology (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Work on a medical oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients with solid tumor cancers (e.g., breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, esophageal cancers).
- Patient care spans from new diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life care.
- Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, occasionally 1:5.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced before final schedule posting.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units is required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Adults and geriatrics.
- Common diagnoses include all subtypes of breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers, as well as encounters for antineoplastic chemotherapy.
- Patients may have concurrent medical-surgical issues.
Additional Requirements & Preferences
- Previous travel nursing experience is preferred but not required.
- Must adhere to infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention measures.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required.
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required with specific Ohio codes; must be current within 1 year of start.
- Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
- Professional references: Two required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Fit mask test annually required for inpatient/patient-facing roles; onsite fit testing available if needed.
- Immunizations or titers required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12).
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titers).
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation).
- Hepatitis B (titer or 3-vaccine series; declination acceptable).
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive. Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31). Decliners must wear masks.
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exam required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
Orientation & Policies
- Annual acknowledgment of orientation safety manual, dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies required.
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
This position offers a specialized oncology nursing experience with a focus on solid tumor cancers, telemetry skills, and a supportive orientation process. It is ideal for RNs with at least 2 years of experience seeking a travel contract in a dynamic oncology setting.

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
