Registered Nurse - MICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Shift: Day (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- ICU experience required: Minimum 1+ year recent ICU experience (higher experience requirement applies)
- First-time travel nurses are welcome
- Patient ratios vary by acuity:
- ICU ventilated patients: 2:1
- Cooling/CRRT/High acuity patients: 1:1
- Mixed ICU/PCU patients: 1:3 to 1:4
- PCU and general med/transfer status patients: up to 4:1 based on acuity
- Med-surg float ratio approx. 1:5-7
- Weekend requirement: Work every other weekend
- Float requirement: Float to other ICU and Med-Surg units as needed
- Patient diagnoses commonly include COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation
- Special procedures performed: CRRT, hemodialysis, arterial line placement, central venous catheter placement, tracheostomy placement, chest tube placement
- Special equipment used: Cooling machines, Bair Huggers, massive transfusion protocols, CRRT
- Average ventilated patients per day: 3
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Michigan
- Minimum 1 year of recent Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Required Skills & Competencies
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation and multi-system organ failure management
- IV insulin protocols
- GI surgery care
- Management of chronic/acute renal failure and CVVHD/CRRT
- Arterial line, blood product administration, central line and PICC line care, IV starts
- Medication management including continuous IV sedation, emergency meds, procedural sedation, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Neurological care including CVA/acute stroke management
- Respiratory care including BiPAP, CPAP, ventilator management, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, suctioning (ETT, NT)
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Valid Michigan RN license (pending license acceptable with proof of application and ETA)
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Other certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CHEMO, EFM, ENPC) — verify per unit requirements
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search back to age 18
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/T-Spot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required
- Immunizations or titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- 10-panel drug screen including marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1
- MI LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start (process coordinated via agency)
- MI Central Registry Clearance required for certain specialties (not applicable here)
- Completion of Bronson Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy acknowledgment
- Fit test required if working onsite (specific to certain roles; confirm if applicable)
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam and Competency Exam in specialty completed within 1 year prior to start with passing score of at least 80%
Additional Notes
- Holidays are required to be worked
- No return to office (RTO) in first two weeks of assignment; any RTO must be approved prior to offer
- ICU patients may be held in ICU by physician discretion even if acuity is low, affecting patient ratios
- Floating to med-surg units is part of the role and done in rotation with permanent staff
