Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Bend, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Float required to all North Campus locations within a multi-hospital system (includes several critical access hospitals and trauma centers).
  • May be assigned as primary RN in any med-surg department or as a 1:1 observer in any clinical department.
  • Possible assignment to Emergency Department to care for boarding med-surg patients.
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
  • Weekend shifts required to average 1 per week (may be every other weekend or spread across weekends).
  • No scheduled on-call shifts, but may be placed on standby.
  • Local candidates not accepted (75-mile radius rule).
  • Pending licenses not accepted.
  • Return to office (RTO) restrictions: 7 days.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience in specialty.
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 3-5 years of experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred.
  • Experience with the following patient cases preferred:
    • COPD
    • Stroke
    • Total Joint replacement
    • Sepsis
    • Colorectal Surgery
    • Bariatric Surgery
    • Pneumonia
    • Trauma
    • Altered Mental Status
    • Renal Failure
    • Bowel Obstruction
    • Oncology
    • Withdrawal
  • Epic electronic health record experience preferred.

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse license valid in Oregon required.
  • Primary source verification required (e.g., NURSYS).

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 90 days of start; updated annually.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 90 days of start.
  • Education verification and diploma/transcript on file required.
  • Primary source license verification required.

Certifications (as applicable per unit)

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA provider, instructor, or RQI acceptable.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – as required.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – as required.

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer required; vaccine series alone not sufficient)
    • Varicella
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years) or declination accepted.
  • Negative TB screening (QGold within 1 year) or chest X-ray for positive responders. Annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Negative 12-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (not required annually).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or agency declination/exemption required during flu season (deadline December 1). Masking required during high transmission.
  • COVID vaccination preferred but not required; vaccination record or declination/exemption required.
  • Respiratory safety clearance required annually.

Competency and Documentation

  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
  • Annual skills checklist required.
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge required within 48 hours of signing contract.
  • Completion of facility-specific confidentiality, compliance, emergency contact, and contractual agreements required within 48 hours of signing.

Additional Notes

  • Floating may include any med-surg unit within the system and 1:1 observation assignments.
  • Must be able to work night shifts and weekends as required.
  • No prior travel experience explicitly required, but first-time travelers must have 3-5 years of experience to be considered.

Traveler friendly. Lots of staff. Busy LDRP but not insanely busy. Bend is a beautiful city with lots of things to do.
