Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical Unit (Contract)
Location: New York, NY
Shift: Night Shift (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), every other weekend and holiday required
Contract Length: Approximately 9 weeks (61 days)
Schedule: 3x12 hour shifts
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to a designated group of patients on a Medical Surgical unit. Care delivery is based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
- Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Facilitate admission welcome, bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
- Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers or opportunities for improvement.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
- Participate in process improvement, peer review, quality projects, and nursing research.
- Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors and maintain a safe environment.
- Escalate safety hazards or gaps according to institutional protocols.
- Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Apply cost-effective approaches to patient care resources.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
- Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.

- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
- Project a professional image demonstrating caring, respect, compassion, and empathy.
- Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.

- Average census: 30 patients
- Unit beds: 34
- Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience (required for travel positions)
