Registered Nurse – Med Surg Oncology / Telemetry
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit & Patient Population
- Mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients
- Approximately 48 beds total (24 PCU, 24 MS Telemetry)
- High acuity patient population with a variety of diagnoses including solid tumors and some blood cancers
- Pediatric patients are extremely rare and typically cared for by permanent staff; pediatric experience is not required
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
Schedule & Orientation
- Self-scheduling requests allowed; final schedule balanced and posted every 4 weeks
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- 12-hour day/night rotating shifts possible, with assignments based on department needs and staffing priorities
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum of 2 years Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Skills & Competencies
- Chemotherapy competence is not required; optional 2-day chemotherapy course available for professional development
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exams required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if needed)
Equipment & Technology
- B450 monitors with GE telemetry system
- Bladder scanner
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Continuous bladder irrigation
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps
Patient Care Ratios
- Staffing ratios aim for 1:4-5 but may vary based on unit needs
- Weekend shifts are variable
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
- Education accreditation verification required for nursing degree from accredited programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31) with mask requirement if declined
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Documentation & Other Requirements
- 2 professional references required (at least 1 from a manager/director or formal leadership)
- Employment application required including education verification
- Skills checklist required
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
- Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually

Note: This position involves working with a high acuity oncology patient population on a mixed PCU/Med Surg Telemetry unit with rotating 12-hour night shifts. Oncology experience is preferred but not mandatory, and professional development opportunities are provided.

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
