Tower 18 MedSurg/Tele RN

Role Overview

• 20-bed MedSurg/Tele unit in Houston, Texas
• Lower-acuity general medicine/internal medicine population
• No tele on the floor, but tele competency is required for floating
• 12-hour day shifts
• Every other weekend required
• Holidays rotated with permanent staff
• No call or standby requirement

Required Qualifications

• RN license
• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS required for floating purposes
• Proficient with IV starts and blood draws
• Strong general medicine/internal medicine experience
• Must be able to titrate drips
• Must pass a tele competency exam/EKG exam
• Must be experienced with basic EKG and interpret strips
• Must be able to perform cardiac drips when floating
• Must float to MedSurg/Tele acuity floors

Preferred Qualifications

• Charge nurse experience
• Epic experience

Unit Details

• 20 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:5, with 1:10 when full
• Charge nurse every shift
• Techs can do lab draws and EKGs
• RT is shared between floors
• Common patient types include cellulitis, abdominal pain, inpatient rehab/SNF transition patients awaiting insurance authorization, surgical overflow, direct admits, transplant workups, behavioral patients, and infections
• Common drips include heparin and lasix

Schedule and Orientation

• 12-hour shifts
• Huddles start at 6:45
• Earliest clock-in is 6:38
• Schedule is month to month and manager works with traveler requests
• Orientation includes 2 days in classroom and 2 shifts on the floor

• Navy scrubs required
• Daily parking is available at additional cost
