Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical / Oncology

Location: Albany, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks (options for 8 or 17 weeks)
Shift: 12-hour night shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week (hours not guaranteed during orientation week)
Start Date: ASAP
Radius Rule: Must live within 75 miles


Unit & Patient Care Overview

  • 29-bed inpatient combined Oncology and Medical-Surgical unit
  • Med/Surg side cares for clean patients; active infections only if receiving chemotherapy
  • Primary cohort location for patients with Sickle Cell Disease
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients (day and night)
  • CNA ratio: generally 1:8 to 1:10, CNAs also serve as sitters
  • Float requirements: May float to all acute care, cardiology, or Emergency Center for acute care patient holds; mid-shift floats are rare and only for emergent needs
  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: work 2 out of 3 holidays
  • On-call/call back: rare
  • Break: 30 minutes
  • Uniform: Caribbean blue or white scrubs

Required Qualifications

  • Current Georgia or compact RN license
  • Minimum 2+ years recent experience on an Oncology/Medical-Surgical unit
  • Completed at least 1 prior travel assignment (no new travelers)
  • Certifications required at submission:
    • Chemotherapy certification
    • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • AHA NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Preferred certification: AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Confident and experienced in managing high acuity pain, especially related to Sickle Cell Disease crises
  • Skilled in operating PCA pumps and administering/reassessing frequent pain interventions
  • Experience with peripheral IV insertions
  • Experience with sickle cell management
  • Experience with tracheostomy care and management

Systems & Orientation

  • EMR system: Meditech Expanse (experience with other Meditech versions not accepted)
  • Orientation: First week on day shift

Additional Requirements

  • Cannot have return-to-work (RTO) within 2 weeks of start date and no more than 7 total days of RTO allowed before starting
  • Potential to float to North Campus (1.8 miles from primary hospital)
