Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit

Location: Henderson, Kentucky
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Every third weekend; every other holiday

Job Description

• Provide nursing care on Step Down/Telemetry Unit caring for patients with conditions such as sepsis, CHF, COPD, DKA, cirrhosis, dementia, and post-surgical cases (urology, abdominal, ortho).
• Manage drips including insulin, heparin, and cardiac medications.
• Float within skillset primarily on the home unit; potential float to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice. Mid-shift float within the same campus is common; cross-campus mid-shift float is rare but possible.
• May be required to precept students and new hires as this is a teaching hospital.

Unit Information

• Step Down Unit: 10 beds, nurse-to-patient ratio days 1:4-5, nights 1:5-6
• Telemetry Unit: 15 beds, nurse-to-patient ratio days 1:5-6, nights 1:6
• Smaller facility with strong teamwork and experienced nursing staff
• Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed

Required Qualifications

• Active compact Registered Nurse license
• Current AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
• Minimum 2 years RN experience, including at least 1 year in Step Down/Progressive Care Unit
• Completion of at least 1 prior travel assignment required (prior travel experience required)
• Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required)
• Ability to interpret telemetry and pass telemetry competency tests
• Skills to initiate and titrate insulin, heparin, and cardiac drips
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills

Preferred Skills

• Peripheral IV insertion
• Management of stable home ventilators
• Chest tube and indwelling drain care
• Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
• Administration of stable drips (e.g., lasix, protonix) and blood products
• Continuous BiPAP management
• Neutropenic precautions
• Resilient, adaptable, and strong team player

Additional Information

• Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts
• No on-call or call-back requirements
• COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)
• Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins may result in termination
• Orientation occurs bi-weekly; GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week
