Position Details

Unit Information

• Number of Beds:

  • Unit 630: 34 beds
  • Unit 633: 25 beds
• Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Nights: 1:5 to 1:6
• Staffing:

  • Unit secretaries and tech availability
  • 3 techs when full on unit 630, 2 techs when full on unit 633
• Equipment:

  • Bipaps, high flow oxygen, Vapotherm
  • Alaris pumps, cardiac drips, heparin drips, insulin drips
  • Peritoneal dialysis, wound vacs (in conjunction with wound care)
• Documentation System: Meditech
• Scheduling:

  • 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
  • Every other weekend required
  • Self-scheduling with 4-week schedules
• Floating Policy: May float between PCU units or to med-surg floors
• Patient Experience:

  • Hourly rounding on days
  • Every 2-hour rounding on nights
  • Use of AIDET and communication boards

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum 2 years of RN experience (specialty experience)
• Critical thinking skills
• EKG rhythm interpretation
• Experience with cardiac drips, insulin drips, and heparin drips
• Peripheral IV skills
• Experience with stroke and post-cardiac catheterization care
• Experience with bipaps, high flow oxygen, and multiple oxygen delivery systems
• Experience with tube feedings and NG/Dobhoff tubes
• Peritoneal dialysis experience preferred

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Peritoneal dialysis
• Thoracentesis
• Paracentesis
• Chest tube insertions
• Dobhoff/NG tube insertions
• Central line dressing changes
• Troubleshooting wound vacs

Dress Code

• Black scrubs required

Additional Information

• The unit fosters a "care like family" culture with great teamwork
• Most travelers extend their contracts after their first assignment on PCU
• Techs are utilized to assist with patient care
