Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado (Zone 1 – 60 mile radius around Colorado Springs, CO)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Job Overview
- Float pool position requiring coverage across multiple facilities within a 60-mile radius of Colorado Springs, CO.
- No home base facility; must be able to float to any facility within the zone.
- Facilities include hospitals and medical centers located up to 46 miles from Colorado Springs.
- Float assignments may be given 1–2 hours before shift start (Just-In-Time scheduling) or scheduled weekly at a single facility.
- Units covered include a variety of specialties: General Medical-Surgical Telemetry, Cardiac, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, Emergency Department Observation, and more.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on patient acuity.
- Charge nurses are designated on each unit and generally do not take patient assignments unless necessary.
Patient Population
- Adult to geriatric patients.
- Common diagnoses include cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, oncology, renal, urology post-surgical, general surgery post-appendectomy, gynecology, psychiatric/detox, ENT, general medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry nursing experience.
- Prior neurology experience preferred.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications (American Heart Association).
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Colorado.
- Ability to titrate heparin drips.
Scheduling & Work Expectations
- 7 pm to 7 am night shifts.
- Schedules released 4–6 weeks in advance.
- Expected to work 6–9 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule.
- May be required to participate in holiday rotation.
- Rare call or standby requirements, typically only for low census situations.
- Must submit all time-off requests prior to assignment start.
- Travelers must secure housing that allows floating within the entire 60-mile zone.
Additional Information
- Orientation week requires clinicians to be physically present in-state, even if some modules are remote.
- Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP are used on units.
- Nurse aides are available on units.
- Flexibility to float to different acuity levels including ICU (low acuity holds), Progressive Care Unit/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry.
- Travelers are expected to assist in filling gaps in permanent staffing schedules.
This position is ideal for experienced Medical-Surgical Telemetry RNs comfortable with floating across multiple specialties and facilities within a defined geographic zone.
