Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Overview
- Neuro ICU with 18 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2
- Patient types: Ventriculostomy patients, strokes (with/without tPA), post-craniectomy care
- Common equipment: Ventilators, arterial lines, central lines, Phillips telemetry monitors
- Telemetry tech staffed every shift; nurses read and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow; RNs troubleshoot these devices
Clinical Responsibilities
- Titrate drips as ordered by physicians (various drips, not always set rates)
- Acute stroke management including tPA administration
- Use of NIH Stroke Scale certification required
- Care for patients with ventriculostomy and post-craniectomy
- Collaborate with charge nurse and house supervisor (charge nurse may take assignments if staffing requires)
- Float to other units as needed, including intermediate care (1:3 ratio) and general floors (1:4 ratio)
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license, active in Illinois or application in process
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale certification
- Experience with ventilators, arterial and central lines, and acute stroke care
- Ability to titrate drips and manage complex ICU patients
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 20 hours (one 8-hour shift and one 12-hour shift)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Rotating every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Travelers float first when floating is necessary
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus policy; negative drug screen required for all panels
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity patients, complex drips, and telemetry monitoring during night shifts.
