Job Details

  • Schedule:
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours each (36 hours/week)
    • Rotating shifts including Days (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM), Evenings, and Nights (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
    • Schedule arranged in 6-week blocks, typically one week per shift before rotating
    • Maximum of 2 on-call shifts per week, usually on scheduled workdays but may occasionally be separate
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • Weekend Requirement: Yes
  • On-Call Requirement: Yes
  • Pending License: Accepted with approval for return-to-office (RTO) greater than 7 days
  • Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
  • Charting System: Epic

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year
  • Trauma experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually) including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and education verification
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education Verification:
    • Highest level of education must be verified; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated candidates
    • Official transcripts may be requested if verification is unavailable
  • References:
    • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU/CTICU assignments (charge nurse references not accepted)
    • Standard reference requirements apply for other units
  • Employment History:
    • 7 years of work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
    • Verification of employment for last 7 years required (attestations not accepted)
  • Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of Prior Radiation Exposure: Required for certain specialty assignments

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test: Required within 12 months and updated annually; candidates must be clean-shaven for testing
  • Immunizations and Titers:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
    • Annual TB questionnaire required
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity via positive titer or vaccination
    • Hepatitis B immunity or declination acceptable (declination must be within 1 year of start)
    • Varicella immunity via positive titer, vaccination, or physician-documented history
    • Tdap vaccination within 10 years highly preferred for pediatric, labor and delivery, and postpartum specialties (declination acceptable)
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Flu Vaccination: Required during flu season (September 1 - March 31) with no declinations allowed; medical and religious exemptions handled per policy
  • COVID Vaccination: Initial series preferred but not required

Competency and Training Requirements

  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 12 months (85% passing score)
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for RNs in telemetry, MS/Tele, ER, ICU, progressive care, PACU, IR/Cath/EPEndo/GI units (not required for NICU or behavioral health)
    • Color Blind Testing required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024 (80% passing score)
  • Facility-Specific Training Modules and Attestations:
    • Stroke Education (except pediatric specialties and NICU)
    • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric
    • Preventing Pressure Injury
    • Language Services
    • CAUTI Education (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen
    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability
    • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • AME Blood Administration (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
    • New Employee Orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act (for RNs except Home Health)
    • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
    • eCart Training (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap >6 months or module updated)
  • EPIC Testing: Required for ER RNs with prior EPIC experience; optional but highly encouraged for others

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must provide photo ID matching legal name on first day
  • Parking cost is approximately $125/month
  • Must be independent and confident in trauma and surgical cases
  • Schedule flexibility is limited; block schedule accommodation is not available
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm training required for all RNs except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, and NICU
