Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Monroe, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 18:45 - 7:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Minimum Experience Required: 2 years in specialty

Unit and Patient Details
- Unit Size: 17 rooms, 17 beds
- Patient Age Groups: Neonates, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
- Patient Diagnoses: C-sections (scrub and circulate), vaginal deliveries, operative vaginal births, stabilize neonates, postpartum care, newborn care, antepartum, intrapartum, post-delivery D&C, fetal monitoring (EFM, FSE, IUPC), use of Ram Cannula
- Special Care Nursery: Stabilize and transfer out; magnesium drips started before transfer
- Staffing Ratios (AWHONN guidelines):
- 1:1 for laboring patients
- 1:3 couplet care
- 1:3 mother/baby care
- Includes triage and special care nursery
Required Certifications
- Michigan RN License (must have license in hand)
- ACLS (AHA provider, instructor, or RQI accepted)
- BLS (AHA provider, instructor, or RQI accepted)
- NRP (AAP only)
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - must be updated every 2 years
Required Skills and Competencies
- Epic electronic health record experience required
- Medication system: Pyxis
- Ability to float to Hickman unit as needed
- Use of interpretation services, pharmacy, phlebotomy, physical therapy, radiology, rapid response team, respiratory services, social services, transportation, unit secretary support (no HUC at night)
- Care and procedures in antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and neonatal care settings
- Labor and delivery management including:
- Amnioinfusion
- Assist with high-risk and vaginal deliveries
- Circulate for C-section and recover C-section patients
- Hemorrhage/shock management
- Sterile vaginal exams
- Neonatal care in delivery room: APGAR scoring, neonatal resuscitation, radiant warmers, ID/security banding
- Newborn care: Circumcision assistance and care teaching, car seat education, cord care, metabolic screening, neonatal abstinence syndrome care, phototherapy, thermoregulation
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency care: Adult and infant/neonatal arrest response, telemetry interpretation, use of rapid response team
- IV therapy and phlebotomy: Blood and blood product administration, peripheral IV start and maintenance, infusion pumps/drips/IV monitoring
- Medication administration: Antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin (oxytocin), prostaglandins, terbutaline
- Pain management: Epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, pain assessment and management
- Postpartum care: Breastfeeding/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, fundus/lochia/perineum care, use of breast pumps, wound assessment and care
- Management of conditions such as diabetes mellitus, HELLP syndrome, malpresentations, multiple gestation, placenta previa/abruptio, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, substance abuse, uterine rupture, VBAC management/trial of labor
- Professional skills: Isolation precautions/PPE, vaccine administration
- Surgical procedures: Cervical cerclage, D&C, tubal ligation
Workload and Environment
- Facility births per month: 200-300+
- Work settings include antepartum, community level experience, Level I nursery, LDRP, mother/baby units
- Scrubs provided (green)
- Every other weekend schedule
Required Background and Compliance
- 7-year background check within 12 months of start, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required annually
- Education verification required (highest level)
- Fingerprinting: Michigan LARA fingerprint results required for psych positions; other fingerprinting requirements vary by unit and state
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start (instant acceptable unless on prescription)
- Physical exam: Physician statement within last 12 months (latex-free PPE available)
- N95 Fit Test: Required within 12 months of start and updated annually; onsite exceptions possible with approval
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or TD with proof; declination accepted except for certain units
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 3 months; annual updates required
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) positive titer, 2 vaccines, or approved exemption required
- Varicella positive titer, 2 vaccines, or approved exemption required
- Hepatitis B series, positive titer, or declination accepted
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption required during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); declinations not accepted during flu season
- References: Two professional references within 2 years, including at least one from a leader (Charge RN or above)
- Skills checklist required for all candidates
Additional Notes
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required annually for RNs, with remediation and retake process
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training may be required and can be obtained onsite after start with approval
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams required as applicable
- Radiation badges issued by facility if applicable (not recruiter responsibility)
- Jot Form (facility-specific onboarding form) must be completed at least 10 days prior to start
- Return to work period: 7 days excluding holidays
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Michigan
- Minimum of 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
- Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support issued by American Heart Association
- BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association
- NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure certification
- EFM - Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Antepartum nursing experience
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
This position offers a comprehensive Labor and Delivery nursing experience with a focus on high-acuity maternal and neonatal care in a well-supported hospital environment. It is suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience in the specialty and who hold a valid Michigan nursing license. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
