Registered Nurse - PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit)

Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Job Description

  • Provide individualized nursing care in the peri-anesthesia setting for geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients from admission through discharge.
  • Apply knowledge of peri-anesthesia nursing fundamentals, pharmacology (including medication doses, purposes, interactions, side effects, and reactions), airway management, and nursing assessment parameters.
  • Float to other campuses as needed based on census.
  • Shift: Four 10-hour day shifts per week (10:00 AM - 8:30 PM or 11:00 AM - 9:30 PM), no weekends.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Minimum 2 years of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience, with PACU experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) experience.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 6 months of start, including SSN trace with all aliases, county searches, nationwide sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, OFAC sanctions list, and Medi-Cal Suspended and Ineligible Provider List checks required as applicable.
  • Education verification required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months of start (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per California law).
  • TB screening questionnaire within 90 days of start, renewed annually; negative TB test or chest x-ray required.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Fit test for approved masks within 1 year of start, renewed annually.
  • Immunizations required: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella, and seasonal flu vaccination during flu season. Medical or religious exemptions considered with proper documentation.
  • Respiratory safety clearance required prior to start, renewed annually.
  • Negative drug screen and immunization documentation must be maintained and uploaded as required.

Competency and Testing

  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required, renewed annually.
  • EKG exam (pass/fail testing) required onsite after start for ICU and Medical-Surgical/Telemetry RNs at this location.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam may be required for some telemetry units.

Documentation and Orientation

  • Must review and sign facility-specific documents including job description, standards of business conduct, code of conduct, vendor training, overpayment refund policy, and general regulatory orientation prior to start.
  • Complete conditional offer of employment attestation prior to start.
  • Complete Epic questionnaire (RN only) if starting on or after 11/3/2025.
  • Provide a clear, passport-style photo for badge (for per diem only).

Work History and References

  • Full 7 years of work history required on application with no gaps; employment verification required for up to 7 years.
  • Two professional references required for clinical and acute care candidates, one for per diem non-acute care.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be prepared to float to other campuses if census requires.
  • No weekend shifts required.
