Medical Surgical Nurse

Overview

• Travel/contract role in Wilmington, North Carolina
• Night shift: 4x12 hours, 18:45–7:15
• Contract length: 13 weeks
• Weekly hours: 48
• Local candidates accepted
• First-time travelers accepted

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in North Carolina
• Med Surg / Telemetry (2 years of experience)
• Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
• BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing

Schedule and Work Expectations

• Floating is required
• Weekend coverage: 12–16 weekends per contract
• RTO after booking is not allowed; additional RTO or call-offs may lead to cancellation and DNR
• May be assigned to storm/hurricane response coverage and may be required to report during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
• May be reassigned mid-contract and preassigned to units as needed

Unit Details

• Typical medical-surgical patient population with telemetry-remote monitoring
• Common diagnoses include dementia, diabetes, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, and hip fracture
• Unit includes isolation care for COVID patients
• Stepdown patients are cared for by stepdown staff, not medical-surgical staff

Skills Needed

• Medical-surgical and telemetry-remote monitoring care
• Dysrhythmia interpretation and rapid response support
• IV insulin protocols
• Colostomy care
• Feeding tube care and management
• Hemodialysis-related management
• Blood product administration
• Central line blood draws and PICC management
• Peripheral IV care and starting IVs
• Heparin and PCA management
• Chest tube management
• CPAP/BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, nasal cannula, and other non-invasive airway support
• Oral suctioning, oxygen mask, and portable oxygen tank use
• Isolation precautions
• Wound care and wound vac management

Orientation and Onboarding

• Unit orientation: 24 hours
• Hospital orientation occurs during the first week, with daily class attendance required
• Navy/white scrubs required
