Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Float Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Position: Medical Surgical Float Pool RN
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7:30 AM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday Rotation: Required
  • Floating: Will float to medical-surgical floors at main hospital and Ashley River tower
  • Patient Ratios: May vary depending on unit assignment
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • Float experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

  • Hurricane Season (June - November): Employees may be assigned to emergency response teams during this period

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 form and attestation)
  • Copy of Driver’s License or State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year work/living history
    • National and state criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification (diploma or transcripts preferred)
  • NURSYS license verification (active, unencumbered)
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug test within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam: Initial and updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccination/booster documentation
    • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
  • Color blindness testing prior to start
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment history verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Completion of orientation modules (OurDay platform) prior to start is mandatory
  • Clear, passport-style photo required for badge (frontal view, solid light background, business casual attire)
  • Parking permit available with a $20 registration fee for garage use (additional fees may apply for other parking locations)

Additional Notes

  • Block scheduling accommodations may be possible with manager approval
  • Local radius considered up to 60 miles
  • Radiation badge required only for specific roles (not applicable for this RN float position)
  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency assignments during hurricane season (June-November)
