Registered Nurse - Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients
- Approximately 48 beds total (24 PCU + 24 MS Telemetry)
- Patient diagnoses include a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers
- High acuity patient population
- Pediatric patients are very rare on this unit; pediatric experience is not required
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
Schedule
- 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights (7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM)
- Typically 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week)
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but may change based on staffing needs
- Weekend shifts are variable
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- Oncology experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Skills & Competencies
- Competency exams required prior to start, including:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Unit-specific competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must be passed within 1 year of start)
- Chemotherapy competence is not required; optional 2-day chemotherapy course available for professional development
Equipment & Technology Used
- B450 monitors with GE telemetry system
- Bladder scanner
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Continuous bladder irrigation
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA) required
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Annual TB questionnaire
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination or positive titer
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination (mask required if declined during flu season)
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and annually thereafter
- Background check and fingerprinting results must be clear before or pending with proper attestation
Professional References & Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager, director, or formal leadership role
- Employment application and skills checklist required
Staffing Ratios & Work Environment
- Staffing ratios aim for 1 nurse to 4-5 patients but may vary based on unit needs

Additional Notes
- Parking permits available for agency staff (costs and options vary)
- Candidates may be required to complete annual stroke education and NIH Stroke Certification depending on unit assignment (not specified as mandatory for this role)
This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work with a high-acuity oncology patient population in a mixed medical-surgical telemetry setting with flexible rotating shifts. Prior oncology experience is a plus but not mandatory, and professional development opportunities are supported.

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
