Registered Nurse – ER Holding
Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Weekend rotation required, no on-call
Job Overview
- Primarily assigned to Emergency Department (ED) holding.
- Must be willing to float to Medical-Surgical (MS) and Telemetry (Tele) units when not utilized in ED holding.
- Responsibilities include patient assessment, clinical procedures (IV insertion, Foley catheterization, dressings), patient and family education, tele monitoring, ventilator care, and safe medication administration.
- Recognize changes in patient condition and act as patient advocate.
- Work independently and collaboratively within the team.
- Maintain professional appearance and complete tasks timely.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check including social security trace, county searches, sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required and updated annually.
- Education verification required; BSN preferred but not mandatory.
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per California law).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including clearance for work.
- TB screening: Negative test or chest x-ray within 90 days, renewed annually.
- Immunizations and titers required or documented immunity for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (series or declination)
- Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov 1 – Apr 30)
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually; accommodations considered for religious exemptions or failed tests.
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually.
- Color vision exam required if applicable.
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years (Aya requirement, not client).
Additional Requirements
- Must complete unit-specific skills checklist annually.
- Must complete competency exams as applicable, including medication/pharmacology and possibly EKG/dysrhythmia competency.
- ICU and MS/Telemetry RNs at this location required to take an onsite EKG exam after start.
- Must review and sign facility-specific documents including job description, standards of business conduct, code of conduct, vendor training, and regulatory orientation prior to start.
- Must complete facility-specific attestations including conditional offer of employment and religious accommodation forms if applicable.
- Employment application must include full 7 years of work history with no gaps; employment verification required for up to 7 years.
- Attestations for unverifiable employment are limited and require approval.
Work Environment
- Night shift with weekend rotation.
- Floating between ED holding, Medical-Surgical, and Telemetry units.
- No on-call responsibilities.
This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Department RNs who are flexible and able to work night shifts with floating responsibilities in a fast-paced hospital environment.
