Critical Care Float Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Alamosa, Colorado

Job Overview

  • Float pool role covering ICU, Medical-Surgical (MS), and Emergency Department (ED) units across two facilities (15 minutes apart).
  • Floating schedule varies based on unit needs; no fixed time in any one specialty.
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:00–6:00), totaling 36 hours/week.
  • Patient ratios vary by unit; ICU ratio typically 1:2.
  • Must be comfortable floating between ICU, ED, and MS units.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
  • No on-call duties.
  • Locals accepted.
  • Compact nursing license accepted; pending licenses accepted.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Colorado.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience.
  • Experience in Emergency Department (ED) and Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) units.
  • One completed travel nursing assignment.
  • Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, and PALS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Skills and procedures: paracentesis/thoracentesis, intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement.
  • Experience and comfort with floating between ICU, ED, and Med Surg units.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, county searches (7 years), nationwide sex offender check. Felonies and certain misdemeanors reviewed case-by-case.
  • State license primary source verification required.
  • Medication and competency exams required; must meet or exceed passing scores (minimum 80% if no Angoff score).
  • Colorado CAPS (Criminal and Abuse/Neglect) release authorization and clearance required prior to start.
  • Photo for badge required.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (annual updates not required).
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start; preferred to complete prior to start but can be done onsite if necessary.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test (T-Spot or QuantiFERON Gold within 45 days of start; PPD not accepted) or negative chest X-ray if prior positive TB
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if titers negative/equivocal
    • Hepatitis B: positive titer or completed vaccine series; booster and retesting if negative/equivocal
    • Varicella: positive titer, 2 vaccines, or history of disease
  • Negative 10-panel drug test with chain of custody within 30 days of start; instant drug screens accepted.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (October 1 – March 31); declinations not accepted.
  • Colorado CAPS check results required; new search required if gap of 30+ days between assignments.

Additional Information

  • No time off (RTO) allowed within first two weeks of assignment; maximum 10 days total time off allowed; no full calendar weeks off.
  • Guaranteed contracted hours.
  • Charting system: MediTech Expanse.
  • Free parking available in unrestricted spaces.
  • Scrub color is employee preference.
  • Facility type: Acute Care Hospital.

This position is ideal for experienced ICU travel nurses comfortable with floating between critical care, emergency, and medical-surgical units on night shifts.
