SICU (St. John's ICU) RN

Overview

• Travel contract for an experienced Surgical ICU nurse
• 14-week contract
• Location: Carmichael, California
• 12-hour night shifts
• 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• 2 years of experience
• Active BLS
• Active ACLS
• Active NIHSS
• Active California RN license
• Must be able to read and interpret EKG strips

Preferred / Helpful Experience

• Background experience with surgical patients, including CEA, fem-pop, EVARs, laparotomies, and thoracic surgeries

Unit Details

• SICU / St. John's ICU
• 10 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
• Cerner EMR
• Charge nurse generally does not take patients and provides break relief
• Nurse aides available as Safety Attendants (sitters)
• Vents: Yes
• Hospitalist or Intensivist in house
• RT 24/7
• Pharmacy 24/7
• IV Team: No

Schedule and Work Expectations

• Every other weekend
• Holidays rotate with core staff
• Shift start time: 6:45
• Report is at the bedside
• OT and extra shifts are available
• Self-scheduling is used, but final schedules are balanced by the manager
• Schedules are released 4 weeks in advance
• Block scheduling is generally not available
• Travelers work 2 of the 3 major holidays

Floating

• May float to all other Sacramento facilities
• Mid-shift float to another facility is rare but can happen
• First to float

Orientation

• 1 to 2 days on the floor with a preceptor

Patient Population

• Postop recoveries, primarily vascular, Fempops, VATs, thoracic, and open belly surgeries
• CRRT
• ECMO
• Line placements are common

• Scrub color: Navy
• Under shirts must be navy, white, or black
• Scrub jackets are optional and must be navy
