Medical Laboratory Scientist

Role Overview

• Filling a generalist role to cover various shifts because of a severe staffing shortage. Most staffing gaps are on nights, evenings, and mid-shifts. Beyond October, the need shifts to mostly mid-shifts.
• Training: 8-hour shifts, 5 days per week, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, for about one month until trained.
• After training, works as flex staff covering vacation requests, illness, and staffing gaps. If the department is fully staffed, works the bench while lead techs complete reports and projects.
• Does not float between units.

Schedule

• Night: 7 on / 7 off, 10-hour shifts, 21:00 to 07:30. Requested, but only for candidates able to work alone after training and competency.
• Evening: 14:00 to 22:30
• Midshift: 12:00 to 20:30, or 10:00 to 18:30 (only when staffing is minimal)
• Day: 06:00 to 14:30, or 07:00 to 15:30
• Weekends required, rotating weekends only after fully trained.
• On-call required, as needed.
• Block schedules: No.
• 48-hour weeks approved: No.

Required Qualifications

• Medical Lab Scientist with 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year
• Experience in the blood bank
• Experience with Epic

Onboarding Requirements

• Background check within 90 days of start, covering the past 7 years, updated annually
• Third-party education verification
• 9-panel drug screen within 12 months of start (instant results acceptable)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by an MD, NP, PA, or DO
• TB test (IGRA/QuantiFERON or 2 PPDs) within 12 months of start, updated annually
• Immunization records or titers for MMR, varicella, and hepatitis B; Tdap within 10 years. Declinations are accepted for some vaccines.
• Flu vaccine or declination during flu season; COVID vaccination record preferred, or declination
• Fit mask testing, completed onsite if no valid record within 1 year
• RespSafety medical clearance for respirator use, updated annually
• Float policy acknowledgment
• Government-issued photo ID, Social Security card, and E-Verify attestation
• Passport-style badge photo with a neutral background
• Annual regulatory training modules (about 3.5 hours)
• Skills checklist for the assigned unit, updated annually
