Registered Nurse – Ortho/Med Surg Overflow (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit cares for patients 18+ who have undergone bone and joint reconstructive surgery, joint replacement, orthopedic trauma surgery, or sports injuries.
- Also covers Med/Surg overflow patients.
- Remote telemetry monitoring with off-unit station staffed by tech.
- Patient ratios typically 1:4, occasionally flexing to 1:5.
- Team nursing model.
Schedule & Hours
- Night shift: 7 PM – 7 AM (3x12 hour shifts)
- 36 or 48 hours per week contract options available, with overtime after 48 hours.
- Every other weekend required.
- Orientation every other week on Thursdays and Fridays (computer lab Thursday all day, Friday until lunch, then on-site).
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia.
- Minimum 1 year of orthopedics experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association.
- Skills and experience with telemetry, IV start, Cardizem, Argatroban, Amiodarone, Dopamine, CPMs, Orthopat, Constavac, and Hemovac.
Certifications & Skills
- Preferred: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), NIH Stroke Certification.
- Pass/fail testing required for EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration.
- Annual competencies and stroke education hours required as applicable.
Float & Scheduling Flexibility
- Floating within scope of practice may be required to meet facility needs.
- Manager open to accommodating blocked schedule requests if feasible.
Compliance & Health Requirements
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (October 1 – March 31) unless medically exempt with documentation.
- COVID-19 vaccination not required; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start.
- Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval).
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella vaccinations or positive titers required.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity documentation required; series completion tracked during assignment.
- Annual physical exam required, confirming good health and no limitations.
- Annual fit mask testing required (N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205). PAPR accommodations available if fit test fails.
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel; no placeholders or pending results accepted.
Background & Documentation
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start.
- Additional screenings: SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international criminal checks if applicable.
- SAM and OIG checks must be completed independently within 30 days of start and updated annually.
- Required documents: Candidate profile/work history, specialty skills checklist, minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years, RN license verification (NURSYS), driver’s license, social security card.
- References: At least 1 from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse who directly supervised candidate within 1 year of start.
Orientation & Facility Specifics
- Orientation includes Cerner Infusion Management training.
- Charting system: Cerner.
- Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs.
- Parking: Free for travelers.
- Facility type: Level 1 Trauma Center, major teaching hospital with 855 staffed beds.
Additional Notes
- No local candidates accepted; radius requirement is 100 miles (75-99 miles requires facility approval).
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent date worked.
- Candidates refusing flu vaccine without approved medical exemption will not be accepted.
- Multiple facility-specific policies and forms must be reviewed, signed, and returned prior to start (dress code, blood administration policy, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms, liability and time gap forms).
- Inservice training modules and pass/fail testing must be completed prior to start (estimated 4 hours).
This position offers a challenging orthopedic/med-surg travel nursing opportunity with night shifts, competitive hours, and a supportive team nursing environment in a major trauma and teaching hospital setting.
