NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Covington, Louisiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Provide care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with delivery attendance experience (vaginal and C-section).
• Assist with newborn transition, admit/discharge neonates to/from NICU and Newborn Observation Unit (NOU).
• Coordinate care with multidisciplinary team including NNP, MD, RN, Social Services, RT, Radiology, OT.
• Educate and support parents, assist new mothers with breastfeeding.
• Float to NOU with patient ratios of 1:4-6 and normal newborn nursery as needed.
• Patient ratio typically 1:2-3.
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
• Holiday requirement: at least 1 major and 1 minor holiday.
• Scheduling is self-managed with specified weekend and holiday obligations.
• Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM).

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Louisiana
• Minimum 3 years of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) experience, including experience within the last year
• Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Delivery attendance experience (vaginal and C-section)
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Government-issued photo ID matching all documentation.
• Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years.
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
• Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, etc.).
• Employment application with 7 years of work history, no gaps over 30 days.
• Skills checklist updated within 12 months of start and annually.
• Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 12 months and annually (minimum 80% score).
• Core competencies (Parts I, II, III) updated annually.
• Physical exam within 12 months of start (not required by employer but required by placement agency).
• Immunizations and titers:

  • Tdap within 10 years (declinations accepted).
  • MMR (2 vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, rubella).
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer).
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination.
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray per current guidelines (two-step skin test or equivalent).
• Annual TB questionnaire.
• Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31), with exemptions and declinations accepted.

• Float requirement includes working in Newborn Observation Unit with different patient ratios.
• Compassion, empathy, and strong customer service skills are essential.

This position is ideal for experienced NICU nurses with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable managing complex neonatal care and working flexible schedules including weekends and holidays.
