Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

Location: Salem, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Information

• Unit: Emergency Department
• Number of Beds: 27
• Staff: 50 RNs, 25 Medics
• Shifts:

  • Day Shift: 1 charge nurse, 5 RNs, 2-3 medics; additional 4-5 RNs at 11am; 1-2 RNs at 3pm
  • Night Shift: 1 charge nurse, 5 RNs, 2-3 medics
• Patient Ratios: 4-6 patients per nurse
• EMR System: Meditech

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year
• Completion of 2-3 prior travel nursing assignments
• Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

Job Responsibilities & Skills

• Perform procedures such as:

  • Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI)
  • Sepsis interventions
  • Stroke protocol including tPA administration
  • Central line placement
  • Care of psychiatric patients
  • Transfers to other facilities (EMTALA compliance)
• Work in a high-acuity, fast-paced, high-volume ER environment
• Manage patient ratios typically around 5:1

Work Schedule & Environment

• Weekly Hours: Approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend Shifts: Four weekend shifts in a four-week period (Friday or Saturday nights; Saturday or Sunday days)
• No on-call requirements
• Dress Code: Navy blue or white scrubs
