Unit / Float Scope

• Unit/Department: MedSurg/Tele Float Pool
• Float pool units: 6N (36 beds), 7N (29 beds), 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), and Critical Care (20 beds)
• Assignment process: Reports to the clinical coordinator’s office before shift start for unit assignment
• Typical assignment: Most likely assigned a parent unit and very basic telemetry patients within scope of practice

Required Qualifications

• Certifications: BLS and ACLS
• Skills: Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
• Assessment: Must take and pass a cardiac rhythm exam

Schedule Requirements

• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, Saturday/Sunday for both days and nights
• Holiday requirement: Works in the holiday rotation with permanent staff

Clinical / Unit Details

• Patient ratios: Mainly 1:5–6 on days and nights; occasionally up to 1:7 toward the end of a shift depending on acuity
• Common patient types: CHF, cardiac cath, CP, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, ortho, and oncology
• Respiratory equipment: CPAP and BiPAP only; RT manages
• Telemetry: Phillips monitors; most units have monitor techs
• Drips: Does not have to titrate drips
• Support staff: CNAs are used on all units
• Charge nurse: Every unit has a charge nurse; day charge does not take patients, night charge does
• Orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
• Dress code: Royal Blue
