Registered Nurse (Pediatric Float Pool) - Charlottesville, Virginia

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Pediatric float pool position covering various pediatric units including:
    • PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)
    • NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
    • Pediatric Med/Surg
    • Pediatric ED boarders
    • Postpartum / Mother-Baby units
  • Must have PICU and NICU experience; previous NICU/PICU float pool experience considered.
  • Schedule: Days, 36 or 48 hours per week.
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed.
  • Must work every other weekend and 2 out of 3 winter holidays.
  • Up to 40 hours can be approved for time off.
  • Must adhere to the facility’s float policy.
  • Epic electronic health record experience required.

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years PICU experience required.
  • Certifications required (or pending submission):
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • Dr. Brown’s Infant Driven Feeding Certification (can submit with pending; course cost approx. $185)
  • Virginia nursing license required (can submit with license pending).

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, education verification, and abuse registry search (if applicable).
  • Drug testing within 2 months of start, including marijuana and fentanyl panels.
  • Health documents including:
    • Physical exam (initial and annual)
    • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, TB (2-step PPD or Qgold), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
    • Flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions)
  • Facility-specific documents such as professional appearance guidelines, release authorization, TB screening, traveler compliance, and fit testing acknowledgment.
  • References and clinical performance evaluations as applicable.
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and Mother-Baby units (not required for this pediatric float pool role).

Additional Notes

  • Fingerprinting requirements may apply depending on unit assignment.
  • Some certifications and background checks must be updated regularly (e.g., every 30 days or annually).
  • Candidates with latex allergy must complete a specific questionnaire.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, multi-unit pediatric environment with flexibility.

This position is ideal for experienced pediatric critical care nurses comfortable floating across multiple pediatric specialties within a large academic medical center.
