Registered Nurse - PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Float to various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) units as needed within a secure corrections unit environment.
- Ensure staff safety in a locked corrections unit with controlled access by Corrections Officers.
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:3 for PCU, 1:4-5 for MS.
- Shifts may include days, nights, or rotating 12-hour shifts, with scheduling reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change based on staffing needs.
Patient Population & Care Focus
- Patients include those with active oncology diagnoses/treatments (solid tumors, hematology), oncology workup admissions, history of cancer admitted for other reasons, and non-oncology diagnoses such as COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, etc.
- Care involves Medical-Surgical and Telemetry skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care across Oncology Medical-Surgical and PCU units.
- Manage cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation and telemetry monitoring.
- Administer IV insulin protocols, feeding tube care, pre/post hemodialysis care, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line management.
- Manage respiratory support including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care, and oxygen therapy.
- Support interdisciplinary teams including pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, and rapid response teams.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum of 1 year of recent experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience in Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing.
- Experience with pre/post hemodialysis management and renal failure care.
- Skilled in non-invasive airway management and tracheostomy care.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program required.
- Drug screening (10-panel) within 3 months of start required.
- Various health documents required including:
- Physical exam within 1 year.
- Immunizations and titers for MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, TB screening.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
- Monthly monitoring for exclusion lists (EPLS/GSA/SAM/HHS-OIG).
- Annual competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG exam and medication/pharmacology competency.
- Completion of facility-specific policies and compliance training annually.

- Work environment is a locked corrections unit with a high-security setting.
- Must be able to float between PCU and Medical-Surgical units.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
