ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
- Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- Guaranteed hours: Yes
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: Yes, within ICU service line to other ICU areas
- Block scheduling: Not accommodated
- Local candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
- Pending license accepted: Yes
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days RTO per 13-week contract
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1.5 years ICU experience required; 1.5 years MICU experience preferred
- If less than 2 years ICU experience, Level I ICU experience is required
- Must have experience in a 20+ bed ICU
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Must pass Relias EKG exam (Interpretation and Management of Dysrhythmias required)
- Experience with:
- Pressor support
- Endotracheal tubes (ETT), tracheostomies, feeding tubes, chest tubes
- Wound care
- Sterile technique including line insertion, paracentesis, bedside trach placement, bronchoscopy, phlebotomy
- Preferred experience:
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
- Swan-Ganz catheter
- Inhaled and IV Flolan
- Continuous Venovenous Hemodialysis (CVVHD)
- Proning patients
- Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) and Level 1 Rapid Transfuser
Required Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Missouri (pending license accepted)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- Relias Basic Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (must be completed within 1 year of start and updated annually)
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification) but not mandatory for this position
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required (e.g., driver’s license or state ID)
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including:
- Statewide searches
- MO State Highway Patrol check (renewed annually)
- Nationwide and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (quarterly)
- Education verification of highest nursing degree (cannot pend at start)
- Fingerprinting required if assigned or floating to long-term care or rehab units in Illinois
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, including panels for amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP (must not expire during assignment)
- MO Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) results required for Missouri placements
- Illinois State Exclusion List and other state-specific checks as applicable
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask testing (N95 respirators) with annual renewal; facial hair must allow proper fit
- Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per facility protocol (2 negative PPDs or T-Spot/Q-Gold within 1 year)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as per unit requirements
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 - April 1)
- Hepatitis B declination required (vaccine not mandatory)
Orientation & Facility Policies
- Orientation modules required through online platform (approx. 16 hours) unless completed in current calendar year
- Must review and sign facility policies including:
- HIPAA Acknowledgement
- Latex Allergy Questionnaire
- Confidentiality Form
- Hand Hygiene Policy
- Fingernail Policy
- Dress Code Policy
- Parking: Monthly parking passes available at a cost; no charge for straight night shifts with employee parking access
Documentation & Other Requirements
- Professional references: Two required, preferably supervisors within the last year
- Employment application must be completed and uploaded
- Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests required as applicable
- Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months of start)
- Vehicle registration form required for day shift workers
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 1.5 years of Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience, with MICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
