NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Huntington, West Virginia
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Provide nursing care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio.
• Floating required to a stepdown NICU unit.
• Care for neonates including those 29-34 weeks and >34 weeks gestation.
• Patient care may include management of CPAPs, HFNC, RAM, intermediate patients, and telemetry monitoring.
• Responsibilities include feeding support (bottle, breast, gavage), oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tube placement and management, isolation precautions, neonatal sepsis care, IV therapy, blood and blood product administration, central/implanted line care, medication administration (antibiotics, antivirals, anti-seizure), neonatal dosage calculations, and care for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
• Additional skills: developmental care, patient/family teaching, phlebotomy, thermoregulation, respiratory distress syndrome management.
• Documentation performed in Cerner electronic health record system.
• Scrubs color: Hunter Green.
• Work schedule includes every other weekend.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia
• Minimum 3 years of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) nursing experience, with experience within the last year
• Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Certifications required:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID must be carried during work hours.
• Background checks: 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and international background check if applicable.
• Drug screen within 30 days of start, including confirmation values for a comprehensive panel of substances.
• Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands.
• Immunizations and titers required or documentation of immunity/declination for:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis A, B, C
  • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccine (or approved medical/religious exemption)
  • COVID-19 seasonal vaccine (initial series preferred; declination form required if opting out)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility requirements (QGold or T-Spot within 6 months, updated annually).
• N95 fit testing onsite at orientation (clean-shaven required for males).
• Facility-specific documents and attestations must be completed prior to start, including confidentiality agreements, respiratory protection policy, orientation and annual education review, and IT access agreements.
• Proof of 2 clinical references required.
• Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable.

Additional Information

• Floating to stepdown NICU unit is mandatory.
• Telemetry monitoring skills required on the unit.
• Candidate must be prepared to work every other weekend.
• Documentation and compliance with facility-specific policies and modules are mandatory.
