Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: East Chicago, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse – Operating Room (OR)
  • Shift: Day shift, 5 days per week (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
  • Hours: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
  • Patient Ratio: 1:1
  • Floating required
  • Call requirement: Five weekdays and 1 weekend on-call (1 on-call weekend every 6 weeks)
  • Block scheduling not accommodated
  • Local candidates accepted
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Special requirement: Experience with C-section procedures required

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of OR nursing experience
  • Must hold a valid Indiana RN license or a valid Compact RN license
  • Certifications required prior to start:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Must pass EKG and Pediatric tests onsite
  • Prior travel experience: Not accepted for first-time travelers (first-timers not accepted)
  • Must complete pass/fail competency exams on the first day of orientation, including:
    • Adult and Pediatric Medication Exams
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG Challenge (advanced EKG exam with caliper measurements)
  • Must complete annual competency exams and certifications as required (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification, OSHA, Core Parts I-III)
  • Color blind testing required within 1 year prior to start (online acceptable)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start, cleared to work with no restrictions and free of communicable diseases
  • Fit mask (N95 respirator) required prior to start; facial hair must comply with OSHA standards
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year prior to start
  • Immunity or booster documentation required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • Drug screening: 10-panel test required within 3 weeks of start (instant tests not accepted)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31); exemptions accepted with proper documentation
  • COVID-19 vaccination required: 2 doses of Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose of J&J; religious and medical exemptions accepted with proper forms; declinations not accepted

Documentation and Compliance

  • Background checks required within 30 days and updated annually, including:
    • Social Security trace
    • County residence and employment verification
    • Nationwide criminal background
    • Sex offender registry
    • FACIS Level 3
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required prior to start
  • Transcript or diploma of highest education required prior to start
  • Primary source verification of state license required; temporary licenses not accepted
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license
  • Employment application including education, training, skills, specialties, licensure, certification, and preferences required
  • Two references from most recent contract required (supervisors or charge nurses acceptable)
  • Completion of unit-specific job description and assessment/charting guidelines prior to start
  • Required to complete various facility-specific study guides and attestations before arrival (e.g., Medication Administration, Pediatric Medication, EKG Challenge)
  • Emergency contact form and other facility-specific documents required prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Return to office (RTO) restrictions: maximum 5 days
  • Candidates must be prepared for a challenging EKG exam onsite, which includes multiple-choice and rhythm identification sections lasting approximately 2 hours
  • Remediation process available for EKG exam failures, with up to 3 attempts allowed
  • Must comply with facility code status policies, which may require staff to stay on campus during certain codes

This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with C-section experience who are comfortable with a structured call schedule and rigorous competency testing.
