Registered Nurse – Cath Lab Holding Unit

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Post Cardiac Cath Unit (PCCU) caring for pre- and post-cardiac catheterization patients and some emergency department overflow.
  • Manage arterial/venous sheaths post-cath, TR bands, new pacemakers/defibrillators, and Watchman devices post-procedure.
  • Discharge patients typically within 24-48 hours post-procedure unless requiring CABG consult or surgery.
  • Patient diagnoses include NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, atrial fibrillation/flutter, bradycardia, tachycardia, heart blocks, SVT, V-tach, sinus arrhythmia, and patients with AV pacemakers/defibrillators.
  • Adult patient population.
  • No chest tubes or critical drips; drips managed include nitroglycerin, angiomax, heparin, electrolytes, fluids, and antibiotics.

Schedule & Staffing

  • Night shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 7:30 PM to 7:00 AM.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 on days, nights, and weekends.
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week.
  • Blocked schedule not guaranteed; discuss during interview if desired.
  • Limit holiday time-off requests to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia.
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience in a Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
  • Experience in MS/Telemetry monitoring.
  • Experience in Cardiac Cath Lab.
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • ACT certification.
  • AVOX certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Preferred Certifications

  • ACLS (preferred but not required for this unit).
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) preferred.

Clinical & Technical Requirements

  • Must complete pass/fail competency exams including EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration tests prior to start.
  • Annual color blindness testing required.
  • Annual stroke education hours required depending on unit assignment.
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required annually; PAPR accommodations available if needed.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good health and no physical limitations.
  • Negative TB test within 3 months of start; annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Tdap, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, hepatitis B series or titer.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved medical or religious exemption is granted.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Social Security card required (legible).
  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start; new background check required if break in service exceeds 30 days.
  • Required federal screenings (SAM, OIG, sex offender) must be completed within 30 days of start and updated annually.
  • Primary source verification of RN license (NURSYS) within 30 days of start.
  • Must submit: candidate profile, specialty skills checklist, minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years, RN license verification, driver’s license, and social security card.
  • One reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse from a facility worked within 1 year of start.

Orientation & Facility Information

  • Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs.
  • Parking is free for travelers.
  • Facility is a Level IV Trauma Center and major teaching hospital with 838 staffed beds.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates cannot return as travelers within 2 years of last permanent day worked at this facility.
  • Candidates refusing flu vaccination without approved medical exemption will not be accepted during flu season.
  • Clinicians may be floated within their scope to meet facility needs.
  • 100-mile radius rule applies for travel distance; exceptions require facility approval.

This position is ideal for experienced cardiac RNs comfortable with telemetry monitoring and post-cardiac cath care, seeking a night shift travel assignment in a large acute care teaching hospital.
