Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Neuro Trauma ICU

Location: Springfield, Oregon
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Unit: Neuro Trauma ICU (also floats between CVICU, Telemetry, Acute Care, Obs, ED boarding)
  • Start Date: December 8
  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:2
  • Experience Required:
    • Minimum 2 years preferred (1 year considered if recent experience in a large facility)
    • Recent Epic experience required
    • Experienced travelers preferred (2-3 prior completed assignments)
  • Weekend Requirement: Flexible scheduling based on unit needs
  • On-call: Not required
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Locals Accepted: No
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes
  • Return to Origin Restrictions: None

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • BBLS (Basic Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) or TCAR (Trauma Care After Resuscitation) - required 1 year after assignment start date for Neuro Trauma ICU candidates
  • CCRN, CSC, SCRN, TCRN preferred but not required before start

Required Skills & Experience

  • Previous trauma nursing experience
  • Interpretation and management of:
    • Dysrhythmias
    • Multi-system organ failure
    • Thermoregulation (hypothermia/hyperthermia)
    • Pre/Post cardiac catheterization/intervention care
    • IV insulin protocols
    • Chronic/acute renal failure
    • Arterial line, central line, PICC line management
    • Starting IVs and continuous IV sedation
    • Emergency medication administration and procedural sedation
    • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
    • Hypothermia protocol/Arctic Sun management
    • BiPAP, CPAP management assistance
    • Chest tube insertion/removal assistance
    • Care of ventilated patients, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
    • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
    • Suctioning (ETT, NT)
    • Ventilator management
    • Infection prevention and isolation precautions (PPE use)
    • Surgical wounds with drains and wound vac care
    • Temporary pacer management (required)

  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Donor management
  • Post cardiac arrest care
  • Psychiatric symptoms
  • Multiple system organ failure (MSOF)
  • Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
  • Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)

Special Procedures on Unit

  • Chest tube insertion
  • Central line and PICC placement
  • Bedside tracheostomy
  • Keo tube placement
  • Intraosseous (IO) insertion
  • Code blue response and massive transfusion team participation
  • Backup for hospital cardiac arrest team
  • Intubation
  • Post cardiac arrest cooling catheter placement
  • Use of Nitric Oxide and cardiac cooling pads
  • Removal of femoral and radial sheaths

Common Equipment

  • Pulmonary artery catheters
  • Right and left Impella devices
  • Ventilators
  • Cheeta (likely a device or system)
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
  • Zoll cooling catheter
  • Arctic Sun cooling pads

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Must complete PeaceHealth orientation manual and pass orientation quiz with 100% prior to start
  • Background checks and verifications required (including SSA release, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, Social Security verification)
  • Physical exam within 1 year required
  • Fit mask test within 1 year required and updated annually for onsite candidates
  • Immunizations and health documents required: Tdap, TB test or chest X-ray, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Flu vaccine or declination, COVID-19 vaccine or religious exemption
  • Drug testing required within 30 days of start
  • Must complete facility-specific forms including criminal disclosure, demographic form, and confirmation of standards checklist
  • Must submit a passport-style photo for badge
  • Must comply with dress code and masking policies (N95 fit testing onsite)
  • Must be flexible to float within scope to other units as needed
  • Orientation includes a 4-hour unit-specific orientation

This position is ideal for experienced travel nurses with strong neuro trauma ICU skills, recent Epic experience, and required certifications ready before start.
