Registered Nurse (ICU Float Pool) - Colorado
Location
- Must float within a 60-mile radius zone based around Colorado Springs, CO.
- Facilities within the zone include multiple hospitals located between 7 and 46 miles from Colorado Springs city center.
- No home base facility; floating assignments vary by schedule and are communicated before or on the start date.
Contract Details
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
- Schedule released 4–6 weeks in advance with two formats:
- Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible float within that facility
- Just-In-Time (JIT) assignment 1–2 hours before shift start
Unit and Patient Care
- Float pool covers multiple ICU types: MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:1-2 depending on acuity; may flex up to 1:3
- High acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella) require 1:1 care
- No nurse aides on unit except for sitter needs
- Respiratory Therapist coverage is designated but may not be present 24/7; RNs assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management
- RNs expected to read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support)
Required Qualifications
- Must have at least 3 years of ICU experience if a first-time traveler; otherwise, minimum 2 years ICU experience preferred
- Epic electronic health record experience required for first-time travelers
- Prior travel experience preferred but not mandatory
- Certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Must be comfortable titrating all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and others
Orientation and Training
- 1-2 days of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
- Week of orientation requires clinician to be in-state, even if some modules are remote
Scheduling and Time Off
- 6-9 weekend shifts required in a 6-week schedule
- May be asked to participate in holiday rotation
- Rare call or standby requirements, typically only during low census
- All time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment
Additional Notes
- Floating may include other acuity levels such as PCU/Stepdown and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units
- Scrub color/dress code: any color allowed
- Travelers are responsible for securing housing that allows floating throughout the entire 60-mile zone
