Registered Nurse (RN) - Float Position

Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (typically 3 weekend shifts in 4 weeks)


Job Summary

  • Float RN position covering general medical and surgical units.
  • Patient population includes diverse diagnoses such as chronic illnesses (COPD, Diabetes, CHF, ESRD), GI issues (pancreatitis, bleeding, gastroparesis, IBD), infections (pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, C. diff), neurological conditions (stroke, dementia, TBI), and mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, substance abuse).
  • Patients may undergo procedures including colonoscopies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bronchoscopy, and minor surgeries (lap chole, I&D, biopsies, amputation).
  • Patient ratios typically 1:5-6.
  • Floating limited to other medical units only.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1.5 years of experience in Level 1, Level 2, or tertiary care settings.
  • At least 1 year of MedSurg experience at a large hospital (600+ beds).
  • Current Indiana RN license or compact RN license (effective 7/1/20).
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Job Duties & Skills

  • Provide general medical-surgical nursing care including assessments, care planning, and inter-professional communication.
  • Utilize electronic health records (Epic) and equipment such as IV pumps (Hospira), wound vacs, feeding pumps and tubes, chest tubes, telemetry monitoring, pyxis machines, Accucheck blood glucose monitors, and SCDs for VTE prevention.
  • Manage IV therapy including heparin and insulin drips.
  • Participate in hospital orientation and nursing-specific orientation including Epic training.

Orientation & Training

  • 8 hours of non-billable orientation (1 day general hospital + ~5 days nursing orientation including Epic classes).
  • Clinicians returning within 12 months of last assignment are not eligible for non-billable orientation.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • 12-hour night shifts.
  • 3 weekend shifts required in a 4-week period.
  • Floating to other medical units as needed.
  • Dress code: Caribbean Blue scrubs.

Additional Notes

  • Local candidates within 50 miles may be subject to a rate reduction (not included here).
  • Client may cancel assignment up to 24 hours in advance per 13-week contract.
  • Prior travel experience is not specified as required.

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs comfortable with floating and working night shifts in a large hospital setting.
