Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Summary

  • Provide nursing care for patients of all ages, independently managing assignments based on provider orders, standards of care, and hospital policies.
  • Make clinical decisions independently during shifts and maintain accountability for all actions.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to CNAs/Techs as appropriate.
  • Deliver safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem diseases and treatment complications.
  • Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
  • Coordinate patient care activities with physicians and healthcare team members.
  • Educate patients and families about tests, procedures, disease processes, and coping strategies.
  • Document patient assessments, care plans, progress, and responses thoroughly and accurately.
  • Participate in patient discharge planning and provide aftercare instructions.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Engage in ongoing education, in-services, and competency checks.
  • Support orientation and mentoring of new staff, travelers, and students.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and unit goal setting.
  • Comply with dress code, scheduling guidelines, and hospital policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid, current, full, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alaska.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum of one year of recent Emergency Department (ED) experience within the last year.
  • Experience in supervisory roles.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • Current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have or obtain flu vaccination.
  • Start date will be no less than 6 weeks after fingerprint cards are processed.
  • Must live at least 50 miles away from the facility to be eligible for this travel contract.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
  • Must be able to handle routine and emergent situations calmly and effectively.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Support the nursing mission by assisting with staffing needs and floating to other units as required.

Note: Housing and travel expenses are not provided.
