Unit Details

• MedSurg unit
• 52 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 on days and nights
• Common patient types include pneumonia, CHF, COPD, renal disease, sepsis, stroke, and overflow general surgical

Experience

• First-time travelers are okay

Schedule

• Nights
• 3 12-hour shifts, 1845-0715
• Manager makes the schedule but will consider block scheduling
• Weekend and holiday requirements depend on staffing needs

Clinical Responsibilities / Workflow

• RNs are not required to titrate drips
• Common titratable or set-rate drips include heparin per protocol and antibiotics
• Tele Tech reads strips and sends them to the EMR; RNs need to verify the rhythm
• RT equipment on the unit includes CPAP and occasional BiPAP

Support Staff

• 2 charge nurses on each shift, with no assignment
• 2 break nurses
• Nurse aides/patient care techs are available; duties include ADLs/personal care, vital signs, and CBGs if delegated

Floating

• May float to the surgical floor and PCU within skillset

Call / Standby

• No call requirement stated
• Could be placed on standby/call three times during the contract, or volunteer for it

Dress Code

• Any color scrubs
• Scrubs are not provided

Orientation

• 2 12-hour shifts on the unit of orientation
