Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) - California, Bakersfield

Job Details

• Shift: Days
• Hours per Day: 8 hours
• Hours per Week: 40 hours (may vary between 36-40)
• Schedule: Monday to Friday with call requirements; call can include every other weekend and approximately two days per week on average
• Call Response Time: 30 minutes
• Floating: Required to float between two hospital campuses as needed
• Orientation: Unit/department-specific orientation provided
• Scrubs: Provided

Work Environment

• Operating Rooms: 5-6 suites in use
• Average Cases per Day: Approximately 15
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner
• Charge Nurse: Present but does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
• OR Techs: Available

Common Case Types

• Orthopedics: total joint replacements (knees, hips, shoulders), knee and shoulder scopes, total shoulder arthroplasties (TSAs)
• Urology: cystoscopies, ESWLs, TURPs, penile prosthesis, orchiectomies, open prostate surgeries (nephrectomies rare)
• Gynecology: hysterectomies (including robotic), D&C, slings, gynecologic oncology, salpingo-oophorectomies
• Neurosurgery: orthopedic spine, brain tumors, craniotomies, subdural hematomas, transsphenoidal tumor resections, VP shunts
• Other: hand surgery, podiatry, DaVinci robotic procedures, vascular surgeries (AV fistulas, thrombectomies, carotids, endarterectomies, femoral-popliteal bypasses), general surgery (open, laparoscopic, robotic), ENT (tonsils, adenoids, pediatric ENT), bariatrics, ophthalmology

Required Qualifications

• Licenses/Certifications: RNFA certification, BLS, ACLS
• Experience: Must have experience in orthopedics and robotics (experience in robotics is a deal breaker if absent)
• Additional Experience Preferred: Neurosurgery and gynecology (including surgical women's health)
• Scrubbing: Required for RNs

Additional Information

• Contract length: 14 weeks
• Scheduling is coordinated with the manager; block scheduling may be used at manager’s discretion
• Call hours cover the period from end of shift until the beginning of the next day
• Weekend and holiday call required, varies by rotation
