Job Description

  • Shift: ICU Nights
  • Patient Ratio: 1:2
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years ICU experience
  • Certifications Required: ACLS, BCLS, NIH Stroke Certification
  • License: Current and up-to-date nursing license required (Missouri license verifiable on NURSYS)
  • Skills Required:
    • Experience with hemodynamics
    • Ability to titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips
    • Bedside tracheostomies (trachs) and PEG care
    • Frequent cardiac outpatient monitoring
  • Preferred Experience: Machine experience and EPIC charting
  • Weekend Requirement: 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week period, every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Floating within scope to meet facility needs is expected
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Locals: Not accepted (local radius rule: 75 miles)
  • Pending License: Accepted
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week for 3-12 hour shifts

Start Date

  • Biweekly starts, with a 3-4 week compliance tier

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS (AHA only)
  • BLS (AHA only)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all nurses; must be updated annually)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must meet or exceed passing score)
  • Unit Specific Competency Exam (updated annually)
  • Other Possible Certifications:
    • PALS (if applicable)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) if applicable
    • CPI or MAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior) if applicable

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background Check:
    • Criminal background check within 6 months of start (7-year search including statewide and nationwide)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
    • Education verification of highest nursing degree (cannot pend at start)
    • State-specific searches (Missouri and Illinois) as applicable
  • Fingerprinting: Required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units (not required for Missouri or BJC IL Home Care)
  • Drug Testing: Required within 1 year of start, must include a full panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical Exam: Required within 1 year of start
  • Fit Mask Testing: Annual N95 fit testing required; onsite testing available if needed
  • Immunizations & Health Documentation:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (2 negative PPDs or T-Spot/Q-Gold within 1 year)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination (with no exemptions allowed in certain units)
    • Hepatitis B declination form required (vaccination not mandatory)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept-April)

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Photo for Badge: Head and shoulders photo on white background, no obstructions
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement: Must be signed prior to start and updated annually
  • Latex Allergy Questionnaire: Required annually
  • Confidentiality Form: Required annually
  • Regulatory Compliance Education: Completed through WorkRamp prior to start, must score 80% or higher
  • Hand Hygiene, Fingernail, Dress Code Policies: Must be reviewed and acknowledged prior to start
  • Orientation Modules: Required for all RNs and LVNs, completed through WorkRamp before start (approx. 16 hours)
  • BJC Badge: Required for all per diem candidates

References & History

  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application and unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start
  • Performance evaluations may be requested but are not mandatory for extensions or per diem

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be ACLS certified and have at least 2 years of ICU experience.
  • Floating within scope is expected to meet facility needs.
  • Weekend shifts are mandatory as specified.
  • Locals within 75 miles are not accepted for this travel position.
  • Pending licenses are accepted.
  • Compliance documents and certifications must be current and uploaded prior to start.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a well-staffed acute care hospital with a focus on critical care nursing in the ICU setting during night shifts.
