Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1-2 couplets
  • Unit: Labor & Delivery (Antepartum, LDRP, Mother/Baby)
  • Weekend Requirement: Minimum 3 weekend shifts per month (Saturday/Sunday only)
  • On-Call: Not required
  • Floating: Occasionally to Postpartum if within scope
  • Block Shifts: Not available

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Arizona
  • Labor and Delivery experience: minimum 3 years, with experience within the last year
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
  • AWHONN Intermediate
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWHONN Advanced
  • C-EFM (Certified Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • RNC-OB (Registered Nurse Certified in Obstetrics)
  • Experience with high-risk antepartum, facility with >300 births/month
  • Skills such as amniocentesis assistance, triage of obstetrical patients, spiral electrode placement, circumcision care, car seat education, metabolic screening, neonatal abstinence syndrome care, phototherapy, PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) use, cervical cerclage, D&C, tubal ligation, and Level III L&D experience

Key Skills and Responsibilities

  • Assist with sterile speculum exams (effacement, dilation, station, presentation)
  • Perform NST (Non-Stress Tests), reflex checks, edema assessment, clonus
  • Conduct sterile vaginal exams
  • Use and calibrate Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM), including external and internal fetal monitoring and intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) placement
  • Recognize and treat abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
  • Administer blood and blood products
  • Draw venous blood, start and maintain peripheral IVs, use infusion pumps/drips/IV monitoring
  • Medication administration
  • Postpartum care and procedures including care for vaginal delivery, cesarean section, couplet care, multiple births, postpartum hemorrhage, and pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Assist with high-risk and vaginal deliveries, circulate for C-section, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, and C-section recovery
  • Neonatal care in delivery room including cord care, newborn assessment, hypoglycemia management, infant identification, and discharge teaching to parents
  • Epidural anesthesia/general anesthesia support, pain assessment and management
  • Isolation precautions, PPE use, and vaccine administration

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Current and valid driver’s license or government photo ID
  • Background checks within 1 year including SS trace, 7-year county, national criminal, and FACIS III
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification (diploma or official transcripts) required prior to start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and ability to perform job duties, completed within 72 hours of contract signing
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (can be completed onsite)
  • Immunizations and titers required within 72 hours of contract signing:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (TDAP within 10 years, TD not accepted)
    • Negative TB test (Qgold or Tspot within 1 year) or chest X-ray if prior positive
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or proof of 2 vaccines required
    • Hepatitis B: completed vaccine series, positive IGG titer, or declination within last year
  • Drug testing negative result within 30 days of start (specific panels required)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31)

Additional Notes

  • References and employment history verification required but will not delay start if pending
  • Skills checklist must be current within 1 year
  • Candidate must complete facility-specific orientation acknowledgments and confidentiality forms
  • Candidates must watch a New Employee Orientation video and upload proof of completion before starting
  • Blackout dates for time off requests: May 22-25, July 3-6, September 4-7
