Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (4 shifts per 12 hours, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours

Unit Description

• Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit with 20 beds, including orthopedic patients (Total Knee and Hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases).
• Patient conditions include pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses.
• Unit split by floors:

  • 7th floor: Medical/Surgical patients with behavioral health conditions (e.g., detox, dementia), secured floor.
• Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs.
• Drip medication administration required on all floors.
• Patient ratios: 1:5 (day), 1:6 (night), occasionally 1:7 at night.
• Floating required frequently to meet staffing needs, including potential float to other units and campuses within the hospital system.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start).
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
• EPIC electronic charting experience required.
• BLS certification required.
• ACLS and CPI certifications preferred.
• Must be comfortable caring for behavioral health patients and trained in safety and de-escalation techniques.
• Prior travel experience: First-time travelers NOT accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
• Must be nicotine-free (100% nicotine-free facility).
• Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility).

Work Schedule & Requirements

• Option for 36 or 48-hour shifts and 13 or 26-week contracts (this posting is for 13 weeks, night shift).
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri night/Sat night).
• Up to two weeks of time off (RTO) allowed, must be requested with application; additional time off at manager discretion.
• Holiday work requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays during contract.

Facility Policies & Additional Information

• Mandatory scrubs: Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation).
• Parking permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates.
• Government-issued photo ID required.
• Background check required within 30 days of start, including multiple county and federal checks.
• Drug screen required within 60 days of start and updated annually (instant tests not accepted).
• Physical exam and fit mask test required within 1 year of start, updated annually.
• Immunizations and health documents required:

  • Tdap within last 10 years
  • Annual PPD or equivalent TB testing
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B titer or declination
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
  • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
  • COVID vaccine preferred (medical/religious exemption accepted)
• Annual skills checklist required.
• References: 2 work references from past 2 years required (1 must be from most recent employer if not a current traveler).

Safety & Training

• Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement required.
• Training provided for safety and de-escalation on behavioral health patients.
• Facility is a teaching hospital with complex patient population and advanced care teams.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with medical-surgical and telemetry care, including behavioral health patients, who are willing to float frequently and work night shifts in a high-acuity, academic medical center environment.
