Registered Nurse - Hospice

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide hospice nursing care primarily for geriatric patients with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live. Work setting includes home health, hospice, and skilled nursing environments.


Schedule & Shift Details

  • 40 hours per week
  • 8-hour day shifts: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Call rotation: Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 8:00 PM – 8:00 AM alongside other RNs; weeknight call Monday-Thursday covered by designated RN with volunteer coverage as needed
  • No float requirement
  • Average daily census: 63 patients; approximately 5 visits per day
  • Scheduling based on unit needs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of hospice nursing experience, including hospice experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience in home health settings
  • End-of-life care skills including after treatment (survivorship) care and cultural awareness
  • Pain management skills including adjuvant therapy and calculation of pediatric dosages

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced end-of-life care skills: death pronouncement, counseling, spiritual needs identification, perideath family care, postmortem care
  • Knowledge of ethical and legal issues: advanced directives, medical futility, organ donation, palliative sedation, withholding/withdrawing treatment
  • Advanced medication/pain management: equianalgesic opioid dosing, PCA pump management
  • Phlebotomy and IV management skills: starting/maintaining IVs, peripheral IVs, central lines, ports
  • Authorization of durable medical equipment (DME)
  • Symptom management of ascites

Orientation & Training

  • 40 hours of unit-specific orientation plus standard hospital orientation
  • Required to complete facility-specific education modules and compliance training prior to start
  • Must complete medication safety training and other mandatory education as required
  • EPIC electronic health record system experience preferred; optional EPIC test-out available for experienced users

Patient Population

  • Primarily geriatric patients receiving hospice care with life expectancy of 6 months or less

Technology & Systems

  • EPIC Remote Client
  • SBAR communication framework

Additional Requirements

  • Photo ID (passport or driver’s license) required for badge creation
  • Background check within 6 months required
  • Drug screening within 6 months required
  • Immunizations and health screenings required including:
    • TB test or chest x-ray (if prior positive TB)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) titers or vaccinations
    • Hepatitis B status or declination form
    • Varicella immunity
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement
  • Compliance with facility confidentiality and safety policies
  • Must complete required competency exams including medication and dysrhythmia/EKG competency within specified timeframes

Important Notes

  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • Locals are accepted at travel rates for this position
  • Interview required via Zoom prior to offer
  • Mileage reimbursement at IRS standard rates
