ICU Registered Nurse Job Opportunity

Location: Hastings, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

Seeking a skilled ICU Registered Nurse for a small, traveler-friendly facility. The ICU and PCU share the same floor with 10 private beds. The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:2, occasionally 1:3 for low acuity patients.

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year ICU nursing experience with ventilator management.
• Experience with arterial lines, PICC lines, ports, chest tubes, drains, wounds, ostomies, OG/NG tubes, PPE, arrhythmia identification, cardioversions, TEEs, post-heart catheterization care, defibrillator use, and pain management.
• Ability to titrate drips including insulin, levophed, cardizem, dopamine, dobutamine, TPA, heparin, amiodarone, lasix, and sedation drips.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Adult ICU patients with conditions such as DKA, COVID-19, CHF, MVA, CVA, sepsis, overdose, and general medical cases.
• Pediatric patients are rare; pediatric RNs handle most pediatric cases unless ventilated, then ICU RN manages the vent.

Unit Details

• Nurse aids available; typically 2 aides for 16 patients.
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7; intensivist available during daytime.
• Respiratory therapists available in-house 24/7 but not assigned to ICU specifically.
• Telemetry techs present; RNs responsible for reading their own cardiac strips using Philips telemetry monitors.

Scheduling & Shifts

• 12-hour day shifts (7 AM to 7 PM).
• Approximately 36 hours per week.
• Block scheduling with some flexibility; travelers fill gaps in the schedule.
• Weekend requirement: generally every 3rd weekend, with some flexibility requested.
• Holiday requirement: approximately every 3rd holiday, including winter holidays.
• No call or standby requirements unless voluntarily requested.

Additional Information

• Floating to PCU and occasionally MedSurg units; MedSurg float assignments have a 1:5-6 patient ratio.
• Dress code: solid color scrubs only, no designs; natural hair color required.
• Orientation: 2 days of department-specific nursing orientation plus 1 floor shift.
