Job Opportunity: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (PICU)

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Description

  • Work in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with patient ratios ranging from 1:1-2; 1:3 for intermediate care.
  • Floating to adolescents, pediatrics, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Care (PHOC), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as needed; ratios vary by acuity.
  • Required skills include experience with Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration (CVVH) and patient transport (highly preferred).
  • Charting system used: EPIC.
  • Scrub color: Pediatric-friendly top with navy blue scrub bottoms.
  • Weekend and holiday shifts required every other weekend, as applicable.
  • Schedule accommodations or time off must be approved prior to offer.
  • First-time travel nurses are accepted.
  • Local candidates are accepted.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey.
  • Minimum 1.5 years of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • IV Certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration (CVVH).

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Criminal background check within 30 days of start.
    • Must include all aliases, all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, and various federal/state databases.
    • Candidates cannot start with open cases.
  • Drug Screening: Negative 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within the last 12 months confirming clearance to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol.
    • Immunizations or positive titers for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap.
    • Annual influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required.
    • Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing mandatory prior to start.
    • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if job tasks require glove use.
    • Color vision testing if job tasks require color discrimination.
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 72 hours of signing, required within 12 months of start.
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for critical care units including PICU.
    • IV Therapy/Infusion exam required for all RNs (except OR specialties).
  • Pass/Fail Testing:
    • Pharmacology and basic EKG exams required for clinical staff in critical care units.
    • Candidates have 3 attempts to pass; failure after 3 attempts results in cancellation.
  • Orientation and Training:
    • Must complete annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment.
    • Floating policy acknowledgment required for every new assignment.
    • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required if working in ER, Pediatric ER, or Behavioral Health (not specifically required for PICU).

  • Floating assignments may include adolescents, pediatrics, PHOC, and NICU.
  • Schedule accommodations must be approved before offer.
  • Candidates must provide a government-issued photo ID and driver’s license within 48 hours of signing.
  • Facility uses EPIC for charting.
  • Scrub color requirements: pediatric-friendly top and navy blue bottoms.
  • Candidates must bring all required documentation to orientation.
  • Candidates switching between sites within the same employer with less than 30 days gap may have some documentation accepted from prior assignment.
