Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Lexington, Kentucky
Contract Length: 14 weeks

Job Details

• Acute, non-telemetry medical-surgical unit
• Patient ratio: 1:5
• Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
• Local travelers within 100 miles are not accepted
• Preferred experience at an academic medical center

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Kentucky
• Minimum 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Background and Compliance Requirements

• Background check within 1 year of start, updated annually, including:

  • County criminal background search for all locations lived/worked in last 7 years
  • National criminal and sex offender searches
  • Education verification or signed official transcript/diploma
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG exclusion checks within 30 days of start, updated annually
• Drug testing within 1 year of start, updated annually (specific drug panels required)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, or PA, confirming good health and ability to perform job duties
• Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (specific mask types accepted)
• Immunizations and health screenings required and must be current:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with annual renewal for positives
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or vaccination with booster if needed
  • Hepatitis B: positive titer, series, or declination (annual renewal)
  • Varicella: positive titer or vaccination with booster if needed
  • Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required year-round with exemptions accepted
  • COVID vaccine series or medical/religious exemption required; booster preferred but not mandatory

Certifications and Competencies

• Must maintain all certifications throughout the contract; renewal plans required if expiring during assignment
• Required certifications include:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred
• Competency exams required within 1 year of start and renewed annually, including but not limited to:

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (passing score 80%+)
  • Unit-specific competency exams
  • Color blind testing
  • RN Math Ability competency exam (basic or advanced)
  • Core Parts I, II, and III competency exams
• Pass/fail EKG/dysrhythmia exam required for certain units; must pass within two attempts or risk cancellation
• Skills checklists must be current and renewed annually

• Must review and sign facility-specific policies prior to start, including:

  • Confidentiality agreement
  • Acceptable use policy
  • Electronic communications policy
  • Password policy
• Must complete and maintain all required facility-specific documentation and training prior to and during assignment
