Unit Details

• Department: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) - 5N Neuro Trauma
• Unit size: 28 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Days: 1:4-5
  • Nights: 1:5-6 (dependent on acuity)
• Nurse aides ratios:

  • Days: 1:9
  • Nights: 1:12
• Common patient diagnoses:

  • Neurological focus: strokes, seizures, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Myasthenia gravis, spinal injuries, thrombectomies, TNK/TPA post-treatment, neuro specialties (endovascular), altered mental status, dementia
  • Trauma/orthopedic injuries: hematomas, bleeds, falls on blood thinners, farm and motor vehicle accidents

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience in Med Surg, PCU, or ICU
• Experience must be within the last 1 year
• Drip experience required; RNs must titrate drips such as Heparin, Nitro, Diltiazem, Amiodarone, 3% saline, and Insulin
• Trach and ventilator experience highly preferred, especially home trach vents
• Willingness to learn ventilator management (training provided)
• Open to first-time travel nurses

Certifications and Licenses

• BLS (AHA) required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
• Must hold an active RN license valid in Wisconsin

Scheduling and Shifts

• Night shift: 12-hour shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
• Hours per week: 48
• Self-scheduling with manager balancing; schedule opens 6 weeks in advance
• Weekend requirement: every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
• Holiday requirement: typically 2 out of 3 winter holidays, otherwise every other holiday
• No call or standby requirements

Additional Information

• Charge nurse role exists; night charge nurses take a full team assignment, day charge nurses take smaller assignments
• Floating required to sister Med Surg units covering mixed care, cardiac, general, ortho, heme/oncology specialties
• Telemetry monitoring: central monitor located remotely; RNs do not read their own strips
• Respiratory therapy equipment on unit includes vents, trachs, CPAP, BiPAP, VapoTherm, EtCO2 monitors
• Dress code: any solid color scrubs
• Orientation: 1 shift general orientation plus 1 shift with a preceptor
• Clinicians must clock in/out at the facility
• Previous employment with this facility requires a minimum 6-month gap before reapplying
