Labor and Delivery Nurse - Travel Contract

Location: Santa Maria, California
Specialty: Labor and Delivery
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
• Active California nursing license
• Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, AWOHNN (advanced for L&D), NRP
• COVID vaccine required

Unit Details

• Unit: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum
• Beds:

  • 14 Labor & Delivery beds
  • 6 triage beds
  • 2 OR suites
  • 28 Postpartum beds
• Birth volume: Approximately 250 births per month

Patient Care & Ratios

• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • 2:1 for laboring patients (following AWOHNN guidelines)
  • 1:4 for couplet care in postpartum
• Common patient diagnoses:

  • Any gestational age
  • Antepartum and high-risk deliveries
  • Substance abuse
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Insulin-dependent diabetes

Work Environment & Support

• Fetal Monitoring System: Fetal Link
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner
• Charge Nurse present (usually does not take patient assignments)
• OB tech support available on day and night shifts
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• No in-house OB/Neonatologist, but available if needed
• No IV team
• No ventilators on unit

Shift & Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday shifts rotated with permanent staff
• Call requirement: none, but may be on standby
• Floating:

  • Must float from Labor & Delivery to Postpartum
  • Postpartum nurses do not float to Labor & Delivery
• Floor-specific orientation: 3 shifts

Additional Information

• C-section experience required; circulating for C-sections mandatory, scrubbing preferred
• Scrub colors provided:

  • Navy for Postpartum nurses
  • Seal blue for Labor & Delivery nurses and OB techs
• Telemetry: Phillips system used
